What font does discord use – Discord Fonts Explained

What font does Discord use? Since December 2022 the app’s interface has used gg sans, a custom typeface that replaced Whitney. Discord’s branding and logo have been associated with Ginto, a typeface by Dinamo, and earlier logo versions with Uni Sans. Some of those branding details come from third-party reports rather than Discord itself, so I flag them below.

If you landed here because Discord suddenly looked different, or because you want that look for your server banner, here is a clear rundown.

What font does Discord use now? gg sans

On December 1, 2022, Discord rolled out gg sans across its desktop and mobile apps, website and blog. It has a friendly humanist character, with slightly softer, more casual shapes than its predecessor. It is a proprietary typeface, so there is no official download for general use. Sources disagree on exactly how it was produced (some say in-house, some say commissioned), and Discord has not made a detailed public statement that I could verify, so I will not claim more than that.

Why switch? Commentators pointed to practical reasons: owning a font gives a company control over licensing costs, language coverage and consistency across platforms. That is an interpretation, not a quote from Discord.

Whitney: the font before 2022

Whitney is a humanist sans-serif originally designed by Tobias Frere-Jones for the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and sold commercially. Discord used it for its chat text for years, and many users still associate its slightly narrow, warm letters with the app. Whitney is a licensed commercial font.

Discord’s 2021 brand refresh brought a simplified Clyde mascot logo and a new wordmark. The wordmark and marketing headlines are widely reported to use Ginto, a typeface from the Swiss foundry Dinamo. I could not find a primary Discord source confirming this, so treat it as commonly cited rather than official. Ginto is a commercial font, not free.

The earlier Discord wordmark (before 2021) resembled Uni Sans, a rounded geometric sans-serif available from the free-font community, particularly its heavy weight. Again, this is how designers have generally described it, not an official statement.

Where each typeface is used

Where it is used Typeface
App interface and chat text (Dec 2022 onward) gg sans
App interface and chat text (before Dec 2022) Whitney
Logo wordmark and brand headlines (2021 on) Ginto (widely reported)
Older logo wordmark (pre-2021) Uni Sans or a close relative (as commonly described)
Code blocks in chat A monospaced font such as Consolas

Can you change Discord’s font?

Discord does not offer a built-in font picker, though it has options for text size and spacing in Appearance settings. People who use client mods or custom CSS can alter fonts, but those go against Discord’s terms and can break, so I do not recommend them. For styled text in messages, there are Unicode tricks, but they are not real fonts.

  1. Open User Settings, then Appearance.
  2. Adjust chat font scaling and message spacing.
  3. For stylized text, copy characters from a generator and paste them in your message.

Remember that stylized Unicode text can be unreadable to screen readers and may show boxes on some devices. Our font generator copy and paste post explains the trade-offs.

All of these live alongside the rest of our free fonts. Check each font’s license before putting it on anything commercial. For another brand breakdown, see what font Twitter uses.

Choosing fonts for Discord banners and server art

Server icons, banners and announcement graphics are small, so legibility is the first rule. Use a bold, simple font for the server name, keep it to one or two words, and test it at icon size. Wide, light fonts disappear in a 128-pixel circle. For community themes, match the font to the mood: a blocky pixel style for retro game servers, a sleek techno style for sci-fi communities, a soft rounded style for casual hangouts.

Contrast also matters on Discord because the app is mostly used in dark mode. Light text on a dark background looks bigger and bolder than the same weight in print, so you can often choose one weight lighter than you would on white. Avoid very thin scripts, which can look broken when Discord compresses images.

If you are making emoji or sticker art with text, remember the image will display very small. Letters should be heavy, outlined if needed, and few in number.
